//This is a post from my blog where I write about social issues that appeal to me. I thought this is a huge issue in our progress to become a great nation so posting it here too//
The heading itself might have made some people’s blood boil. How can a person who killed scores of people, and a person who swindled billions of rupees can be guilty free? How come they don’t deserve punishment?
I would have asked the same question three months ago. My whole perspective changed after my return to India. There is no doubt that the people mentioned above deserve punishment. But when people who commit a bigger crime are living without guilt and no punishment, shouldn’t those two deserve the same laxity.
Who are those people committing a bigger crime and getting away with it? Look at the mirror and you have your answer. Kanimozhi supposedly swindled crores of rupees but no one was dead. Kasab killed no more than 100 people. But all of us with our action are killing more than 100,000 people a year. If we are roaming freely why do they have to be punished? Yes! I’m talking about my pet peeve – traffic.
Every year more than a lakh die because of our stupid driving culture. Right away don’t accuse the government of not providing bad roads. It is a problem but not the only problem. Leave the people who are not educated. Look at you who are well educated. How often have you really followed the rules? You pass a vehicle on the wrong side, don’t stop at a signal, and keep honking at the vehicle before without respect for someone’s age. And you complain about Kani and Ajmal. Come on! This is hypocrisy at its worst.
The moment I say this, you will talk about people forcing you to jump signals and doing other stupid things. Have we become a nation where following rules is looked down. If that’s the reason, it’s a shame. This nation doesn’t deserve to exist. I face this every day. I stop at signals and people honk at me. When I stare back they go quiet, even truck drivers. The moral authority you gain by following the rules will make them go quiet. You do none of this and keep complaining about terrorists and politicians.
Remember again, every time you don’t follow the rules, you are killing 100,000 people every year. It might even be your spouse or child or parent. At that point, your hands are bloodier than any terrorist’s and dirtier than any politician’s.
